Why Fifty-Plus Yoga? |
Yoga was never meant to be a one-size-fits-all activity. The practice
of yoga always changed to reflect where one is on the
journey. Yoga traditionally began with pregnancy, then with the infant, the child,
and all through one’s life. The amount, intensity and style of postures and breathwork
are adapted appropriately for each age and stage. Infants are moved into gentle positions
to align the spine, children’s yoga is energetic and creative; yoga for adults is often
focused on release (of toxins, rigid ideas, rigid body movements); while yoga for older
adults becomes about maintaining health while increasingly turning inwards to the
Source, using the breath.

Benefits of Fifty-Plus Yoga: |
Eastern traditions such as yoga consider that high energy activities like aerobic
work-outs, jogging and weight-lifting done competitively, aggressively and without
awareness, are actually using up the body’s resources, one symptom of which is fast,
shallow breathing. By the same token emotional states like stress, anger, resentment,
and other negative emotions over the long term also wear down the body and spirit.
Therefore a yogic recipe for longevity would be to gently stimulate and nourish the
whole person: body, mind and spirit through the conscious coordination of breath and
movement. A balanced practice of postures, breathwork and relaxation should leave the
mind calmed and more peaceful and the spirit refreshed. Physically, a daily practice
of even 15 to 20 minutes assists the body to "burn" the body's fuel more cleanly and
efficiently and stimulates cellular health, thereby maintaining the health and vitality
of inner organs and outer structures.
Scientific studies have shown that a regular, appropriate practice of yoga can
boost vitality, reduce common aches and pains, and assist in the management of chronic
ailments, as well as contributing to an over-all sense of mental and emotional
well-being. After all, it was not uncommon for yogis to live into their 120’s,
so perhaps we are just re-discovering what pills, creams and other Western
inventions will never get at. Health and well-being are simple, inexpensive every
day acts, that work slowly, but effectively from the inside out.
