What is Yoga?

In the West, we often confuse yoga with physical fitness. Yoga is great exercise, but it isn't just about the poses. It's a way of life. Yoga is a system of living, an ancient philosophy that cultivates self-observation and awareness, providing guidelines for how to live with values and habits that encourage respect for self and others.
Breath and movement combine to strengthen and revitalize the body, and center and calm the mind, supporting a "going within", a connection with our Source, however we may define that. The word "yoga" refers both to this process and the goal of the (re) UNION of those parts of ourselves that so often feel divided: body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

How Does Yoga Work?

From a physical perspective, yoga stimulates and balances the entire organism, assisting metabolic function; and the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and musculoskeletal systems, to function more effectively and efficiently. Posture work also teaches the connection between the physical and emotional selves, opening new possibilities for communicating with the body.
Breath and meditation/relaxation techniques lower blood pressure, slow pulse and breathing and improve mood and concentration, reprogramming the body's habitual response to stress.
Many people find that as their bodies and minds become calmer and more at peace, they are able to reconnect with what re-energizes and re-Sources them. This in turn allows them to be at home, in the workplace and in the community in a healthier, more balanced way.
